Who We Are
The California Hispanic/Latino Tobacco Education Partnership (H/LP) is a funded program of the California Department of Health Services, Tobacco Control Section (CDHS/TCS) and is housed at the University of Southern California's (USC) Institute for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Research (IPR). The Partnership staff, Statewide Advisory Committee, Local Partnership Area Representatives, mini-grantees, and cadre of collaborating tobacco control partners, empower Hispanic/Latino communities throughout the state by building leadership skills, advocating for the health of the Hispanic/Latino population and mobilizing the Hispanic/Latino community to support a tobacco-free California.
Our Objectives:
- Strengthen and support a statewide infrastructure for tobacco control
- Support the Tobacco Control Section (TCS), it's Workgroups and its affiliates
- Counter pro-tobacco influences
- Reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS/SHS)
- Utilize the Communities of Excellence indicators and Assets in workplan objectives
- Advocate for the health of the Hispanic/Latino community as it relates to tobacco control and cessation
- Provide guidance and leadership to California's tobacco control movement on Hispanic/Latino issues
Capacity Building, Training & Technical Assistance
- Provide trainings to TCS funded projects on cultural competency issues
- Provide technical assistance to Local Lead Agencies (Health Departments) working on Communities of Excellence (CX) Indicators and Assets
- Provide technical assistance and training to potential mini-grant applicants, Advisory Committee, and Prop 99 funded partners/tobacco control advocates at large
- Respond to specific training requests from Partnership collaborators who are working in tobacco control and attempting to reach and involve the Hispanic/Latino community
Educational Campaigns
- Inform and educate key-opinion leaders on tobacco control issues
- Inform and educate the public on the burden of problem of secondhand smoke and tobacco related diseases in the Hispanic/Latino community
- Inform and educate the public on tobacco industry sponsorship issues in the Hispanic/Latino community
- Provide data and information on tobacco control issues among Hispanics/Latinos in California
- Collaborate with the California Department of Health Services/Tobacco Control Section Ethnic Media Campaigns aimed at Hispanic/Latino audiences in California
